What is the history of the Muwekma tribe of the San Francisco Bay Area? In this talk, Indigenous scholar Michael Wilcox (Stanford University) will examine the long-term presence of the tribe in the San Francisco Bay Area from the end of the Ice Age until the present. We will discuss traditional land use practices and food systems as well as the untold history of resistance and rebellion and the San Francisco Bay Area.
About the Program
Michael Wilcox is an Indigenous/Native American scholar (Yuman descent) who has taught at Stanford University since 2001. He is currently a Senior Lecturer in Native American Studies in the Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity. Seven years ago, Wilcox began a California native plants garden at Stanford for students to learn about the history and culture of the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe. He also serves as the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer for the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe of the San Francisco Bay Area and is a founding board member of the Muwekma Ohlone Cultural Preservation Land Trust.
