LOS ALTOS, CA (July 28, 2026) – Los Altos History Museum continues its commitment to engaging the next generation of community leaders by welcoming Derrick Harris as its Youth Representative to the Board of Directors for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
A rising senior at Pinewood School, Harris has served as a Teen Docent at the Museum since 2024, welcoming visitors and sharing the stories of Los Altos and the surrounding area. Aspiring to become a journalist, he also writes the “Teen Perspective” column for the Museum’s newsletter, offering behind-the-scenes insights through the eyes of a young volunteer. As an intern for local nonprofit Justice Vanguard, Harris applies his passion for social justice.
Now in its third year, the Museum’s Youth Representative program gives a local high school student the opportunity to participate in board meetings as a non-voting representative, contributing a youth perspective while gaining firsthand experience in nonprofit leadership and governance. Harris follows Sophie Filer and Riya Srivastava, who previously served in the role.
“I am honored to serve as the Youth Representative on the Board of Directors,” Harris said. “I look forward to sharing my perspective, amplifying the voices of other young people in our community, and helping support the museum I’ve loved volunteering at for the past few years.”

Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the historic J. Gilbert Smith House, built in 1905 on 14+ acres of apricot orchards planted by Mr. Smith. In 2001, Los Altos History Museum opened the modern building next door, which houses the Museum’s collections, permanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.
The Museum is open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. Tours of the J. Gilbert Smith House are available during open hours. The outdoor agricultural exhibit, gardens and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
