LOS ALTOS, CA (May 19, 2026) – Los Altos History Museum is now accepting applications for its 2026 Teen Docent Program, open to students who will be enrolled in high school during the 2026-27 academic year.
The program offers teens an opportunity to build communication and professional skills, become involved in the community, connect with peers, strengthen college applications through volunteer experience, and explore careers in museums.
“It’s an amazing way to gain skills in engaging with people from all different backgrounds and walks of life,” said Riya Srivastava, the youth representative on the Museum’s Board of Directors. Srivastava, who has been a Teen Docent for three years, will assist Curator and Director of Exhibitions Dr. Amy Ellison in leading the program.
Working alongside adult History Docents, Teen Docents interact with visitors, lead tours, and help with special events.
“In one shift, you could go from showing a child the train diorama to talking with an older visitor who helped build the history we share,” Srivastava added. “Learning how to connect with visitors and tailor tours is a great way to build confidence and think on the spot.”
The application deadline is July 1. Applicants must be available for training on August 8 and 9 and commit to a minimum of four hours per month for in-person work at the Museum during the school year.

Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the historic J. Gilbert Smith House, built in 1905 on 14+ acres of apricot orchards planted by Mr. Smith. In 2001, Los Altos History Museum opened the modern building next door, which houses the Museum’s collections, permanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.
The Museum is open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. Tours of the J. Gilbert Smith House are available during open hours. The outdoor agricultural exhibit, gardens and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
