Museum and Los Altos DAR Launch Youth Poster Contest

LOS ALTOS, CA (April 7, 2026) – Los Altos History Museum and the Los Altos chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution invite students in grades 3 – 12 to participate in a poster contest celebrating America’s 250th anniversary.

Students are asked to create an original poster based on the theme “A Moment that Helped Shape America,” highlighting an important event or person since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. The contest is open to students who live in or attend school in Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, or Mountain View.

“This contest encourages students to explore history in a creative way and reflect on the meaning of freedom and how it connects to their own lives and futures,” said Melanie Ercoli, Regent of the Los Altos DAR chapter. “Our goal is to make historical people and events meaningful for this generation, and to inspire reflection on the nation’s anniversary in a way that goes beyond parades or celebrations.”

Winning entries will be featured in the Museum’s upcoming America’s 250th exhibition, and first-place winners in each division will receive a $100 cash prize.

Entries are due by 4:00 pm on May 15, 2026. For contest rules and a submission form, visit losaltoshistory.org/PosterContestUS250.

Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the historic J. Gilbert Smith House, built in 1905 on 14+ acres of apricot orchards planted by Mr. Smith. In 2001, Los Altos History Museum opened the modern building next door, which houses the Museum’s collections, permanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.

The Museum is open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. Tours of the J. Gilbert Smith House are available during open hours. The outdoor agricultural exhibit, gardens and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
