LOS ALTOS, CA (Apr 14, 2026) – A visit to a downtown Los Altos volunteer fair sparked a deeper commitment to community history for Mira Sharma, who has joined Los Los Altos History Museum’s Board of Directors.
Sharma, a 26-year Los Altos resident, began as a history docent, forming a connection to the Museum. “I grew to love the Museum quickly and wanted to be more involved in helping create a space that plays a role in everyone’s life,” she said.
Born and educated in India, Sharma built her career as a literary editor at Katha, co-editing volumes of Katha Prize Stories, and later taught literature at Lady Shri Ram College. Today, she brings that storytelling background to the Museum’s oral history collection and to exhibits that reflect a broad range of cultures and experiences.
She is also active in the local school district as an art docent and former Los Altos Education Foundation board member.
In her new role, Sharma hopes to help more families connect with the Museum. “I want to see children grow with it,” she said, “and for more people to feel it’s a place for them.”

Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the historic J. Gilbert Smith House, built in 1905 on 14+ acres of apricot orchards planted by Mr. Smith. In 2001, Los Altos History Museum opened the modern building next door, which houses the Museum’s collections, permanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.
The Museum is open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. Tours of the J. Gilbert Smith House are available during open hours. The outdoor agricultural exhibit, gardens and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
