LOS ALTOS, CA (October 27, 2020) – Los Altos History Museum hosts Dolores Davison, Professor of History and Women’s Studies at Foothill College, in a talk entitled “Race and the Suffrage Movement,” held on the Zoom platform, Nov 10 at noon.
“100 years ago, after years of struggle, women in the United States received the right to vote. While some of the leaders of that movement have been universally recognized, others have been ignored or dismissed, including most women of color,” said Davison. “As the US continues to struggle with questions of systemic racism, it is imperative that the roles and sacrifices of women suffragettes of color receive their due; this talk is an attempt to start that process.”
The Museum’s current exhibition, “Rise Up! The Fight for Women’s Suffrage,” highlights the stories of suffragists nationwide and in the Bay Area who fought against inequality, and addresses the problem of historically marginalized groups who continue to struggle today. The exhibition is on display in the Museum’s Main Gallery and has been extended through February 21, 2021.

The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.
The indoor Museum is open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. The J. Gilbert Smith House remains closed.
