LOS ALTOS, CA (March 11, 2020) In response to the county’s recommendations to cancel events for large groups due to the Coronavirus, Los Altos History Museum is suspending the ceremony scheduled for Saturday, March 21. The ceremony was planned to celebrate the unveiling of the newly renovated historic Tank House while welcoming the community to the opening of the Museum’s new exhibition, “In the Fields of the North / En los Campos del Norte.

“The safety of our community is of paramount importance to the Los Altos History Museum,” said Dr. Elisabeth Ward, Executive Director. “We are installing additional hand-sanitizing stations and implementing additional cleaning protocols to allow us to remain open for our normal opening hours, Thurs-Sunday, noon to 4pm.

“While perusing exhibit displays or viewing the renovated Tank House in our beautiful garden, visitors can maintain safe distance from one another. But we do encourage those who are not feeling well to follow the County’s recommendations to stay home. And we have decided to postpone planned gatherings out of an abundance of caution.”

The Museum’s Board of Directors will evaluate whether to proceed as planned for other community events scheduled in March. They encourage visitors to check the Museum’s website for updates at losaltoshistory.org.

Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the J. Gilbert Smith House historic farmhouse, built in 1905. In 2001, the Los Altos History Museum opened its modern building next door, which houses the Museum’s collections, permanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.

The Museum and J. Gilbert Smith House are open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. The gardens, outdoor agricultural exhibits and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
