LOS ALTOS, CA (April 18, 2019) – Los Altos History Museum will open its doors on Wednesday evenings in May from 5-8pm with special programs as part of its May is Membership Month drive. The community is invited to attend a magic show, enjoy music in the courtyard, sip futuristic drinks at a Happy Hour, meet the Museum board members, mingle with volunteers, and view the upcoming new exhibition, “Silicon Valley Eats: a Taste for Innovation.”
The extended hours are part of the Museum’s strategic plan to offer programming to adults and families who are otherwise unable to attend during the day, and encourage participation as members.
“Many people in the community don’t know that the Museum is a membership organization,” said Board Member and Membership Committee Chair Carole Flores. “There are wonderful perks to being a member, and dues help the Museum to share and preserve the Los Altos story.”
The free programs include:
- Meet the Board: A reception and opportunity to meet Museum board members, May 1
- Magic at the Museum: Magician Phil Ackerly performs tricks and comedy in this family-friendly show at 6:30pm, May 8
- Music in the Courtyard: Big Basin Acoustic provides tunes, May 15
- Modern Mixology: A happy hour featuring innovative cocktails of the future, May 22. Cost is $5.00
- Mingle with Volunteers: A reception and celebration of the Museum’s volunteers and its programs, May 29
Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the J. Gilbert Smith House historic farmhouse, built in 1905. In 2001, the Los Altos History Museum opened its modern building next door, which houses the Museum’s collections, permanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.
The Museum and J. Gilbert Smith House are open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. The gardens, outdoor agricultural exhibits and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
