LOS ALTOS, CA (September 20, 2018) – In the spirit of Halloween, the Los Altos History Museum unveils a new exhibit in the historic J. Gilbert Smith House, “Superstitions,” running October 4th – November 4th. Visitors will experience a Victorian-era house in mourning, learn how death influenced life, and discover where many folk beliefs about bad luck and death originated. The exhibit is free to the public, and will be open during Museum hours, Thursdays – Sundays, 12-4pm.

For the brave at heart, special nighttime tours of the J. Gilbert Smith house will be offered on Saturday, October 27th where visitors will learn in-depth about Victorian death traditions and superstitions, and investigate evidence of whether paranormal activity exists in the house today. The Smith family hails from Yorkshire, and many of these superstitions are of Western European origin. Spirits and spooks will lead the tours at 7pm, 9pm and 11pm. Space is limited. Call to reserve a spot at 650.948.9427 x 11.

The Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the J. Gilbert Smith House historic farmhouse, built in 1905. In 2001, the Los Altos History Museum opened its modern building next door, which houses the Museum’s collectionspermanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.

The Museum and J. Gilbert Smith House are open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. The gardens, outdoor agricultural exhibits and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
