Community residents are encouraged to join the garden party festivities to drink and dine and acknowledge the people who established the renovated 1905 farmhouse as the Gilbert Smith House Museum in 1977, and help build upon their legacy by moving the cultural history of the Los Altos area to the next level for future generations to enjoy!

“We were an enthusiastic group of seven newly appointed City of Los Altos Museum commissioners in 1974, and by December 1, 1977, supported by an auxiliary of 50 residents, successfully developed the Smith House and its oak tree setting for exhibitions and events celebrating the early days of our Los Altos area,” recalls long-time resident Pinky Whelan. “It has been a part of my life and I have enjoyed all the fun times that have continued with every stage of the Museum.”

Executive Director Dr. Elisabeth I. Ward observed, “A 40th anniversary is a special opportunity to look back and to make sure that we are carrying forward into the future the values that built this place. It is a time to celebrate, but also reflect. I’m looking forward to hearing wonderful stories and making new memories on this special occasion.”

A Photo Booth to make your own history as well as a Photo Wall of past events, activities and volunteers will be part of the festivities.

Long-term Museum caterers will provide appetizers and no-host bar includes wine, Gordon Biersch beer and his new Wildcide Hard Cider. Karen Bevels Custom Catering will serve the entrée. MaCaJo Acoustic Folk Harmonies returns to provide music throughout the festivities.

The Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the J. Gilbert Smith House historic farmhouse, built in 1905. In 2001, the Los Altos History Museum opened its modern building next door, which houses the Museum’s collectionspermanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.

The Museum and J. Gilbert Smith House are open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. The gardens, outdoor agricultural exhibits and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
