Los Altos, CA – The Los Altos History Museum has been a vital contributor to the life of the local community for almost 40 years. The dedicated support of its volunteers has been critical to its past success.
“I truly appreciate the assistance of hundreds of volunteers over the years,” said the new Executive Director, Dr. Elisabeth Ward. “They have all helped make the Los Altos History Museum a welcoming venue for visitors – young and old.”
As the Museum expands its offerings and outreach, it will continue to need volunteers in all areas. The staff encourages local residents to consider using their talents, or develop new talents, as a volunteer at the Museum. Opportunities include: collections research and support, grant writing, educational program planning for all ages, event management, oral history interviewing and writing, bookkeeping, fundraising and help with the gardens.
In addition, docents and museum store cashiers, who make up a good portion of the volunteer base, are immediately needed. If you enjoy meeting and greeting people, these are jobs that you might consider. Docents are trained before each new exhibition and share this knowledge with visitors. Museum store cashiers process sale transactions during Museum hours and special events with training provided by experienced volunteers. The Los Altos History Museum is open Thursday – Sunday, noon to 4pm. Volunteers are asked to give at least 8 hours per month.
“Being a volunteer at the Los Altos History has allowed me to develop new skills and make wonderful new friends in my community,” observed Eleanor Watanabe, a volunteer, supporter and current board member.
If you would like to help for a few hours per month, please contact Anne Castle at 650-948-9427 or sign up at losaltoshistory.org/support/volunteer/
Volunteering provides a great opportunity to learn more about Los Altos and meet visitors from around the world!
The Los Altos History Museum began in 1977 with the opening of the J. Gilbert Smith House historic farmhouse, built in 1905. In 2001, the Los Altos History Museum opened its modern building next door, which houses the Museum’s collections, permanent and changing exhibits, store and administrative offices. The Museum and its grounds are available for rent during evenings and weekends. Its collections are owned by the City of Los Altos and are managed by an independent nonprofit organization, whose staff and volunteers are responsible for all programs and operations.
The Museum and J. Gilbert Smith House are open Thursday through Sunday, from noon-4pm. Admission is free. The gardens, outdoor agricultural exhibits and picnic area are accessible beyond Museum hours.
