What is a Docent and why do we need them?

Docents are people who are trained to interpret what visitors are seeing, helping enrich their museum experience. Picture in your mind someone leading you through an art exhibit. You are amazed at what you see, but even more wondrous is when you hear the guide talk about the artist’s view…the background or vision of what they wanted you to see.
Likewise, our lovely History Museum and J. Gilbert Smith House need people to guide guests through our many exhibits. We seek people who enjoy seeing the understanding that occurs in guests when an explanation or a story is given about the exhibits. It requires a willingness to volunteer at least four hours a month in one four-hour session, or two hours twice a month. We provide training at the beginning of every new exhibit, and often more as needed. We’re a group of Museum members who enjoy each other and the volunteer work that we do, and we invite you to join us!

Liz Nyberg Named 2012 Gardner Awardee

lizServing in roles from “cheerleader” to "chief", Liz Nyberg is a major player in the success of the Los Altos History Museum. No job is too big or too small for her. Whether entering data for the Crab Feed Program Book, recording oral histories, being a docent, chairing events or serving as board president, Liz performs every volunteer effort professionally, graciously and with good cheer. She helped create--and helps sustain--the museum as a well-respected community and regional resource.

The Museum is tremendously proud of all of the volunteer awardees both past and present.
