Join the Fun!
Volunteering for the Los Altos History Museum is a great opportunity to be part of a congenial group and learn about the history of the Los Altos area. There is a place for everyone, whether it is sharing a special skill or trying something entirely new. We can accommodate needs for flexible hours or place you in a volunteer job with a regularly schedule shift. Please call 650-948-9427, ext. 14
Help wanted! Always room for volunteers at your community museum…
Store Invites New Team Members
The Los Altos History Museum Store invites you to become part of their team. New experiences await all that take advantage of this special opportunity! Here are some things to consider:
- Make new friends! The store person is one of the first visitors see when they enter.
- Learn new skills! Master the cash register and credit card machine.
- Be popular! Wear an apron with your name prominently displayed at all times, and just like at Cheers, “everyone will know your name.”
- Keep your memory sharp! Learn the secret of finding the keys to the store.
- Job security: no downsizing!
- Expand your recipe base: sample delicious food at the Store’s potluck lunch meetings.
And most of all, seize the opportunity to work with great people at a great place while contributing your time to your Museum. To sign up, please contact Patti Rose at pjanetrose@sbcglobal.net or Aja at 650.948.9427 x 14. Thank you and hope to meet you soon! - The Store Committee
What is a Docent and why do we need them?
Docents are people who are trained to interpret what visitors are seeing, helping enrich their museum experience. Picture in your mind someone leading you through an art exhibit. You are amazed at what you see, but even more wondrous is when you hear the guide talk about the artist’s view…the background or vision of what they wanted you to see.
Likewise, our lovely History Museum and J. Gilbert Smith House need people to guide guests through our many exhibits. We seek people who enjoy seeing the understanding that occurs in guests when an explanation or a story is given about the exhibits. It requires a willingness to volunteer at least four hours a month in one four-hour session, or two hours twice a month. We provide training at the beginning of every new exhibit, and often more as needed. We’re a group of Museum members who enjoy each other and the volunteer work that we do, and we invite you to join us!

Liz Nyberg Named 2012 Gardner Awardee
Serving in roles from “cheerleader” to "chief", Liz Nyberg is a major player in the success of the Los Altos History Museum. No job is too big or too small for her. Whether entering data for the Crab Feed Program Book, recording oral histories, being a docent, chairing events or serving as board president, Liz performs every volunteer effort professionally, graciously and with good cheer. She helped create--and helps sustain--the museum as a well-respected community and regional resource.
The Museum is tremendously proud of all of the volunteer awardees both past and present.
